Owning many stocks does not automatically create a diversified portfolio. If the companies depend on the same economic drivers, they may fall together when conditions change.
A company can report higher revenue and still disappoint if margins contract, cash conversion weakens or management lowers its outlook. A modest growth quarter can be encouraging if efficiency and cash flow improve.
Bond yields reflect investor views about inflation, growth, government borrowing and future interest rates. They also influence the return investors expect from riskier assets.
Interest rates affect household borrowing, but also working-capital costs, property affordability, fixed-income returns and how investors value future earnings.
A broad market index can hide very different experiences beneath the surface. A small group of large companies may account for much of its movement while smaller stocks or entire sectors lag behind.
